Monitoring behavior of reinforcement embedded in concrete

Dalibor Sekulić, Dubravka Bjegović, Dunja Mikulić

Abstract

An overview of current methods for determining condition of reinforcing bars embedded in concrete is presented. It is emphasized that a high significance should be given to early detection of corrosion i.e. before its effects become visible, and to determination of the influence the steel corrosion has on the bearing capacity and usability of reinforced-concrete structures. Authors caution that determination of steel corrosion in concrete is a very complex issue where false interpretations are quite common. Several measurement methods should be combined to make reliable conclusions.
